Outcome 1: Economic
Growth
The
Program will focus on developing new approaches to maximise the
triple bottom line value of the Australian rail industry and its
sustainability in response to growing freight demand, increased
mineral exports and increased urban rail passenger patronage linked
to rising fuel pricing and urban population growth.
Key
areas identified for research are:
- Improving the development, recruitment and retention of our
staff; and improving rail’s environmental performance
particularly focusing on reducing emissions and noise.
- Improved supply chain management in order to improve the level
of service provided to customers and hence competitiveness with the
road transport sector.
- Improving the development and operation of passenger services
to maximize economic contribution to urban communities and
GDP.
- Improving the investment models for the industry taking into
account the largely vertically separated nature of rail
operations.
