Operations & Safety

Program R2

Outcome 2: Industry Growth

The Operations and Safety Research Program will focus on maximising the operational efficiency of the rail value chain while simultaneously enhancing and promoting safety.

This program will focus on two research themes closely linked to the proposed research in programs one and three:

  1. Improved operational risk management; and
  2. Better management of the public and customer / rail system interface.

Key strategies will include:

  • Development of national integrated safety incident database and standardised incident investigation instruments that reliably identify design, hardware, human and organizational determinants of accidents.
  • Modeling through a dedicated Rail Human Factors simulation laboratory, together with development of next-generation fatigue risk analysis algorithms to be embedded in Crew Resource Management software systems and analytic tools to identify human factors issues critical to the development of Advanced Train Management Systems.
  • Development of fully articulated national human Factors / Safety Management Systems curricula for use across TAFE / University sectors, supported by standardised safety culture toolkits for identifying leading indicators of safety risk and normative safety incident benchmarking data for use by rail regulators and operators.
