Engineering & Safety

Program R3

Outcome 3: Commercial Growth

The program will seek to deliver research that will assist to increase the capacity and efficiency for bulk freight, inter-modal freight and urban passenger traffic.

More specifically the program is directed toward reduction in:

  • maintenance costs
  • improvement in equipment/asset availability
  • increase in capacity/throughput
  • increase productivity through performance based standards
  • reduce collisions
  • reduce operating costs using information communications technology.

Key research activities will be focused on areas where large savings are possible, in particular:

  • predictive condition-based maintenance systems;
  • innovative methods of increasing average train speeds;
  • load space and axle loads;
  • performance based standards; and
  • the application of automation and monitoring technologies to train operations.
