Outcome 3: Commercial
Growth
The program will seek to
deliver research that will assist to increase the capacity and
efficiency for bulk freight, inter-modal freight and urban
passenger traffic.
More specifically the program
is directed toward reduction in:
- maintenance costs
- improvement in equipment/asset
availability
- increase in
capacity/throughput
- increase productivity through
performance based standards
- reduce collisions
- reduce operating costs using
information communications
technology.
Key research activities will be
focused on areas where large savings are possible, in
particular:
- predictive condition-based
maintenance systems;
- innovative methods of
increasing average train speeds;
- load space and axle
loads;
- performance based standards;
and
- the application of automation
and monitoring technologies to train operations.
