Research Program: R1

Corridor Capacity Analysis

Background:

The rail industry aims to double the rail task for bulk freight, inter-modal freight and urban passenger traffic by 2020. In order to achieve this goal, the capacity of rolling stock and rail infrastructure must be increased via improved materials, designs and practices.

Objective:

This project aims to address the analysis of key elements of corridor capacity limitations in terms of economic performance.

Project scope:

The project will explore key issues such as methodologies used to measure the practical capacity of a rail network, the current capacity of major bulk freight, intermodal and urban passenger networks in Australia, and the effectiveness of various mechanisms for improving capacity.

Benefits:

The project will identify methods that can be used to assess the effectiveness of proposed projects in increasing the capacity of Australia's rail networks to meet increasing demand.

Expected outcomes:

Capacity analysis report

Project timeframe:

6 months
