Background

High Speed Rail (HSR) signifies operations of at least 250 kph. Operating at these very high speeds requires special trains, dedicated lines and signaling systems.

Objective

The main purpose of this project is to examine existing information and develop a model for quantification of non-commercial benefits that apply to HSR, including energy savings, reductions in greenhouse gas emissisions and external costs. This research is complementary to the R1.109 project (High Speed Rail: Strategic Information on East Coast HSR Context).

Outcomes

The main output of the project will be a detailed report including information on energy use and external costs for long distance passenger trains and competing modes.

Benefits

This project will assist the rail industry and other stakeholders to better understand the potential for HSR in Australia.
