R2.112 Simulator Scenarios for Accelerated Training #2: The acquisition of driving strategy and technique

Background

This project builds on earlier work on this topic and seeks to develop an understanding of how train drivers acquire different driving strategies. The project will seek to identify the driving strategies and techniques that experienced drivers’ use, together with some of the problems and pitfalls to be avoided.

Objective

The objective of this project is to produce a greater understanding of how drivers acquire driving strategy. This knowledge can then be used in future projects to develop simulator-based training scenarios that can increase driver competency and reduce training time. This knowledge can also be used to enhance current in-cab information systems.

Outcomes

The outcome of this project is a greater understanding of how drivers acquire driving strategy. This information can be used by industry partners to enhance programs aimed at teaching driving strategy and can be used in future projects in the simulator research program to develop simulator-based training scenarios that can increase driver competency and reduce training time. The outcomes will be delivered as reports and presented back to industry in group presentations.

Benefits

The benefits of this research will be improvements to the design and evaluation of an effective training delivery programs for train drivers.
